OLYMPIACOS AND ATROMITOS WILL RELEGATED INTO SECOND DIVISION DUE TO CORRUPTION SCANDAL.

Olimpiacos, the most important team in Greek football, and Atromitos are in danger of relegation to the Second Division due to a corruption and match-fixing scandal dating back to 2015.

According to local media reports, about 15 people and the two clubs face the harshest penalties of the Greek football regulations following article 27 of the Helena Football Federation (EPO) Code of Conduct; "rig the outcome of a match in order to place bets".

The penalties in question are the descent of the clubs involved into the lower category, a fine of up to 3 million euros for each team and a lifetime suspension for each individual involved.

Among them is the controversial president and owner of the Piraeus team, Evangelos Marinakis, also owner of the Nottingham Forest, of the Football League Championship, who would have to resign from both clubs if he was finally condemned by the EPO.

Among the other defendants are Yorgos Spanos, owner of the Atromitos, Yorgos Sarris, former EPO president, as well as Vice Presidents Aritidis Stathopulos, three other Federation officials, six former referees, the Portuguese coach Ricardo Sa Pinto and the former technical director of the Atromitos Yannis Angelopulos.

The game in question was played on February 4, 2015 and ended 2-1 in favor of Olympiacos. The meeting has already been investigated but the EPO decided to close the case.

On this occasion, the investigation has been carried out for six months by a member of the Greek Code of Conduct and has concluded that there are reasonable suspicions against both clubs.

In addition, it is noted that there are three other investigated parties that involve Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, although it has not yet emerged what they would be or what sanctions are being considered.
